Wow, that is pretty much ridiculous! In a good way I mean… I can’t believe how much technology is changing and will continue to change in the future. It’s crazy for me to think of how ‘amazing” and revolutionized the touch screen iPhone was. Now, check this out! It can actually take pictures with just hand gestures and project them on the wall to be edited etc. It also has the capability to project numbers anywhere, like your hand, to use as a phone. Our society is changing rapidly, especially with the new technology that is becoming available for us to use. I always laugh at my dad when he talks about how he used records to listen to music with. It seems like centuries ago I even used a tape, not to mention a record…when in actuality it wasn’t really that long ago. Technology has just changed dramatically over the last fifty or so years. I can’t imagine what gadgets my kids are going to have, and how much they’ll laugh at the fact that I used an iPod to play my music. I think that the new technology being introduced to our society is amazing. It enables us to do so much more, and learn so much more. It’s a crazy, fast world we’re living in. Buckle up, and enjoy the ride.
ReplyDeleteMy reaction to this is wow. Every time something newer like this comes out I am usually amazed, because I thought stuff couldn’t get any more technologically advanced. I wouldn’t say technology has gone too far, but it is making stuff maybe too easy for the people. At first I thought, there is no way I would wear one of these things around in public. It is very large and has too many gadgets. Then I thought that for all the things this object is able to do, you can throw away a lot of other items. I personally don’t think I would be able to wear one of these around, for I am not a very careful person and would most definitely break it. Not to mention I wouldn’t want to look like that. I also feel I would have a very hard time figuring out how to use it. I think for our culture and society this means more laziness. I mean, people that use this technology will not be lazy by having one. This object itself is not going to make people much lazier. However just imagine what technology is going to come up with to make things easier for people. I am almost afraid to imagine honestly. For me it means another thing in our culture that I am going to get used to. I have a hard time adapting to change a lot of times and having people walking around doing things robots could do, will bother me. For my Kids I’m sure it means things I use right now will look ridiculously old to them when they are teenagers. I cannot even imagine how things will be come 20 years from now. My view on technologies has just been altered. I honestly think that some things technology is going to create are going to be horrible for society. Too much technology might mean loss of jobs for workers that do jobs a computer will soon be able to do. I don’t know how far technology will be taken, but in my mind I keep imagining the movie “I, Robot” becoming a reality. However I give credit, there are some serious geniuses in the world, hats off to them.
ReplyDeleteI saw the picture on the blog homepage, and before I read anything else I literally freaked out… there’s no way, but that would be awesome. And after seeing the video I was kind of in shock. My initial reaction to this device as would be most peoples is how cool! This is almost beyond comprehension, but if we can perfect the iPhone, I believe we can come out with bigger and better things for sure, especially with technology changing at such an exponential rate. When I see things like this I am more of a surface viewer, I never think of the bad things that could happen until someone enlightens me. I like the fact that Megan said she laughs at her dad because we all do it, we all make fun of our parents for being so technologically handicapped. And I’m sure our kids will do the same. The portability of this device makes it that much more versatile. The feature that caught my eye was the ability to take pictures with a simple gesture. I’ve honestly always wished there was a device that could do that. It’s crazy to see that there is almost one available. And I was shocked when the speaker on the video said that with today’s mass production scale, this innovative device would cost $350 dollars, cheaper than the iPhone when it first came out. I can't wait to see what other advances technology brings about in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy initial reaction to this new technology is literally wow, like everyone else said. After thinking about it, it really does not shock me. I knew there would come a time when something like this would be invented. This is an amazing invention and would be great to be able to use one day. The feature with the plane tickets was great. It would be so nice just to look at your plane tickets and find out that your flight has been delayed. It would be so convenient. Our society is so intrigued by technology. When you look around a room filled with people all you see are iPhones or BlackBerrys in their hands. We are fascinated by technology and I am sure that even more crazy technological devices will be created in the future. We have come so far in such a little time with technology and it is almost scary to think about what will be invented in the next fifty years. I cannot imagine what kind of technology my kids will be using one day. Like Kelsey said, I’m sure our kids will make fun of us when we tell them about our iPhones or CDs that we had as kids. I am currently taking a computer class and my professor constantly talks about new technologies. He thinks that one day our TVs and computer will be on one device. I am sure that this will be invented within the next few years because we can already watch episodes of shows from TV, online. There are a lot of very intelligent people in our world and there are still more to be born, so I expect a lot of new technology to be invented that most people will not be able to even comprehend.
ReplyDeleteMy initial reaction was that this technology was awesome. Their calling it Sixth Sense Technology sounds really cool. However, I have always understood the sixth sense to be about ESP, telepathy and precognition. My understanding of the sixth sense in the traditional definition is "the ability to know or sense what will happen before it does." As I thought about it, the technology previewed here really isn't about a technologically simulated sixth sense, but is more a way for us to become more integrated with and a part of technology. George Orwell's 1984 or Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey anyone?
ReplyDeleteThe advances in technology have improved our live and our future advances have the potential to transform our lives. The rise of the Internet, cell phones, portable technology, and cheap computing power has truly transformed the world in which we live in. Technology has made so many things become possible for so many. However, there is a double-edged sword in all of this, as technology has the ability to reach into our lives in a way where our personal privacy and security can be compromised. Does the ability for the government to use those public security monitoring cameras we see and the tracking technology in cell phones and computer make anyone nervous?
The clip triggered my looking back at Orwell's 1984 and Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey's villain, HAL 9000, and it gave me pause. Will this technology, or to be discovered technology, eventually begin to think and reason for us? Will it make up for our personal shortfalls and deficiencies? Will the rise of Artificial Intelligence begin to supplant the need for society to advance its education and control innovation? Where is the line between government influence and control through technology?
I believe the technology of today and of the near future has already and will continue to positively transform ours and our parent's lives. the future of where technology goes raises incredible possibilities for me and for my children, but also raises potential risks and threats. When skills or learning methods are replaced by technology is that all positive? Are certain skills and certain capabilities lost as technology advance?
I don't claim to be an expert or even to understand 2001: a space Odyssey. When I read the synopsis of the book and of the movie and the role of HAL, I did pause and I did take a look at this Sixth Sense Technology with both wonder and skepticism. As technology advances, there is increasing room for misuse/abuse as in anything where we cede control to something or to someone else. In this case, technology can be transformational but there are risks and we should be cautious with how we apply it in our lives.
add in: I also agree with What Kelsey said in her first line, "wow."
ReplyDeleteWOAH!!!! This is really my initial thought. That was the first thing that came out of my mouth when I was what this “work in progress” could do. Although, this is a “work in progress”, I feel it is really amazing. It is awesome that someone could sit down and say I want to build something like this. But on the flip side of this I think it’s pretty ridiculous, too. I’m not sure how much money is put into making things like that, but I’m sure it took a lot of time and effort because the woman said so. I feel the time and money spent on making items like this is crazy. With all the troubles and problems going on in the world we can worry about things like this? That’s pretty sad, to me at least. I believe technology has gone way too far. There is no need for this item. We have cameras, cell phones, PDA’s, internet and not to mention phones that scan products at the store the same way this thing did. I feel, this will only make people especially those in my generation or later lazier. They won’t want to do anything for themselves in years to come, which is a shame. With a future like this, we won’t need to do anything for ourselves. This has kind of put a sour taste in my mouth for technology. Where is it going after this? The comments above are all great and I can see where everyone is coming from, but I can’t see the world anymore technically savvy without it being destroyed. To me, it seems that that’s not far from impossible and that scares me. And yea our kids will think we’re crazy but that’s okay. Our parents and grandparents lived when we thought they were weird and lame and whatever else we thought they were.
ReplyDeleteThis video clip was amazing! I was so impressed with all the new technologies that are being developed. The world seems to become more innovative with every day that passes. We will now have the ability to compare brands, find the most eco-friendly product, and even draw a watch on our wrists. That is insane. What really impressed me about this video clip is TED is genuinely interested in improving society and technology for the future. They are especially involved with conserving the environment and being eco-friendly. To comment on Matt’s post he referenced George Orwell’s 1984, I completely agree with the similarities and the advancement in knowledge. According to www.TED.com TED was developed as a nonprofit organization during the year 1984, which I found pretty ironic. This sixth sense technology will pave the way for our children’s generation to have an extremely futuristic lifestyle. What impressed me more than anything is the way you can just take a picture wherever you are and right then and there edit it entirely. It would not surprise me if they soon discovered a way to also send those pictures and send information too. We literally have all this technology at the palm of our hands.
ReplyDeleteI love how everyone’s reaction prior to mine was the same reaction that I had and that was Wow. The technological advancements that I have seen just in my lifetime alone has been incredible, but this, this is revolutionary. This is the future. Well technically this is the present because it’s not just a thought but it is reality. This is what first popped into my head when I finished watching the youtube clip. The controversy with this technology is whether humans are relying too much on technology nowadays and whether one day we will go too far and we won’t be able to control our own monster. This is a possible fear because just in my lifetime alone I have witnessed the transition from the cassette tape to ipods that can hold 3000 songs, movies, pictures, and even has the option of being a phone also. I have seen factories go from man power to a mix between machines that can assist the man power to the man power being needed just to repair the machines because they are self sufficient now. This new technology though, the TED sixth sense ability, is incredible but it can also be a downfall in its own ways. The pro of this is that it kind of acts as a second brain in sorts of ways because one has all this extra knowledge just at your finger tips without having to use a computer and it can be molded into the everyday life of humans. The con of this is that it acts as a second brain and people don’t really have to attain knowledge the way people do before this technology. Knowledge is power but if everyone has this “second brain” around there neck, what sets the leaders of the world apart from the rest? The only way to find out if this was truly a technological breakthrough is the way that it impacts the world and its future. If people rely on it too much and misuse this technology and don’t rely on their own knowledge then it was wrong but if people just use it as an extra resource but only to check their own knowledge, then in my eyes this new technology is great. We will just have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteMy first thoughts as I watched this clip go along with Matt, I got a little scared as my mind went right back to AP Lang and 1984 by George Orwell. Would this device control our everyday life’s like soma did in 1984. My last thought as I walk out the door is do I have my phone. Our society can barely survive without being constantly in touch with everyone. We have become so used to having the world a click away. Our world has become so technologized we can find out everything with the Internet. This is a good thing and a bad thing. Most of society these days can barely do basic addition and subtraction that you learn in 1st grade, they whip out a calculator (or a phone.) I feel that if this device becomes mass-produced our country might be in for a shock, it will either be a good thing or a bad once again. It will either make our country smarter as a whole or make us into walking robots that rely solely on technology to get us to function. This being said after I sat back and thought about this device I think that the device sounds cool, especially knowing whether or not your plane is on time, or drawing a circle on your wrist to know what the time is. For our children it might mean (if they device got a lot smaller) we could track them and find out where they are if they are lost or kidnapped. I also agree with GReinhardt that they would have to make this device smaller and more fashionable before people start using it. No one wants to walk around and be laughed at because of his or her outfit. I think that technology can be a gift or a curse; it’s up to society to decide which it is going to be.
ReplyDeleteAll I can is fire!!!!! Who doesent like technology, it is the best thing the knowledge can do. I believe that technolgy is great for society, it brings relief to all people across the world. It is a sign of change when technology comes to be the elaborate features of certain parts of technolgy makes everything real to the eye. Technolgy is so good that my Internet is down at my house and I'm using my iPhone 3G to do this blog. But do I think the future looks bad no I don't the future can hold greatness with the advancedment of technology. I don't like the steriotype of the future through movies, some stating that futures are bad. From the terminator, I Robot, and lost in space lol. When I get old I hope Simone develops a great technolgy that could help with everything in life. Not so much everyone will be fat but advancements of health care, what possibilities are thereso many minds out there that can be great and technology will become greater than it will ever be. My children I believe will have the things that I didn't and the technology they have I will be certainly jelous. All I can say technolgy is great and it can only get better.
ReplyDeleteI was completely amazed with this technology. We as a human race keep exceeding our wildest dreams with technology on a daily basis. I seriously believe it wont be long until were flying at warp speed in space ships like in star trek in no time. Its funny when you think about how no one used the internet until about 30 years ago and now we cant live without it. Technology like this can change the world for the better by letting us choose more economical products and make better decisions by use of the internet with every choice we make. This type of technology makes me think the technology of flying cars is nothing to laugh at or think of it a s improbable. I would have never thought in this day and age we could put a bunch of electronics together for $350 and have it do everything the TED company had it do. It makes me wonder what more they could do with more funding and another 5 years of work. Hopefully this technology will change the world for the better as everyone expects it will, but like FDR (and spiderman) said “great power involves great responsibility”. I would hate to see this technology be used for the wrong reasons.
ReplyDeleteEveryone so far says ‘wow’ and this invention is ‘amazing’, and I agree. Greg made a great point, however, in pointing out that people no longer have to work or think for themselves with the newer technology. There should be nothing wrong with wearing your own watch, or knowing when your flight is supposed to take off. For my children’s generation, I’m almost afraid to see how irresponsible they can be with no repercussions because devices like this clean up their messes. Just because we have the ability doesn’t mean we need to implicate it. I would never wear something like that because it would just get in my way, not to mention take away some things I personally enjoy doing the old fashioned way. I miss having a home phone with an answering machine and not being able to be reached all the time. I like taking pictures, not only with a camera, but with the clunky digital cameras because I like them for their quality and I’m not as concerned with convenience. Technology isn’t bad, but losing sight of our own faculties as thinking beings could cause a far worse outcome than the good it could bring. Many already look at Americans as out of touch, but who wouldn’t? Americans are so accustomed to lives of luxury and technology like this that they fail to realize that just as quick as this technology appeared, they could lose everything. Judging by people’s overreliance on the newest and best technology, I would be frightened to experience a real disaster with most of them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone in that my reaction is wow that is really cool. Technology is becoming more and more advanced over time but is there such thing as too much of a reliance on technology? I believe that people rely heavily on technology to do their work while the person sits back and is not learning anything. For instance, I am grateful for the invention of the calculator, but if there was no calculator, people would be smarter and more efficient at math. Yes, technology is very convenient but sometimes I think it has gone too far. This new advancement it technology is just the beginning of all of the new ideas and products that will come out in the future. Our society is always developing, from the invention of the television to the invention of this new device, it is growing and becoming more sophisticated. My grandmother was shocked when I had a touch screen cell phone because they didn’t even know what a cell phone was when she was growing up. I feel that I will be in this situation one day when children of that time are technological savvy and I have no idea how to work the latest gadget. I hope that technology will help people learn and become more educated instead of doing the work for the operator. There is no way in knowing how technology will advance and like Greg, I have to say the people who are inventing these new products have amazing minds.
ReplyDeleteThat has got to be one of the coolest things I have ever scene in my life. I thought that the i-phone was amazing, but this phone/everything made the i-phone look like a kids toy. Watching this clip it really makes you think how far we have come, and what we are going to be living like in thirty or forty years, flying cars, robots? I would have never thought there could be a device that could tell you what toilet paper is best for you, or just by looking at your plane ticket you can find out if it is still on time. With all the advances in technology I think it will be great and help benefit a lot. The only down side to the new gadgets is that I think it will make the new generation lazy. My dad would get me a cell phone till I was fifteen, and I don’t think I would let my kid have one because if he is anything like me he would never turn it off. I love the name Sixth Sense, because it works with you knowing what you like and even what you need. The really crazy thing about this product is that it only cost 350 dollars. I know that this is not the final product, but with technology this great I was really surprised that is so cheep. Now after seeing this and watching all those movies where the machines take over I do think that it could happen. I just hope that Arnold is up to the world again.
ReplyDeleteWOAH! This is the coolest and most bizarre thing ever! It’s a really awesome concept but at the same time it makes you kind of think about how technology has taken over. I think technology has gone to the moon and back. All these new inventions have really made a stamp in our world. Touch screen was the new thing and the big hulabaloo, but now instead of touching a screen you can pretty much poke thin air and the same things will appear and happen. This will really change our culture and society. This technology and all the technology that will come in the future is going to change the way we see and do things. It will change the way we communicate, the way we do certain actions, and just change the human race as a whole. I don’t even know what this means for me or my children. Technology is growing so quickly now and I’m only 18, I can’t eve imagine the stuff they’re going to come up with in like 10 years when I do have kids. This really hasn’t influenced my view on technology. I’m not too into the whole technology thing I find a lot of it unnecessary. When it comes to cell phones cameras and video games I’m kind of Plain Jane., the latest video game device that I own is a Gameboy Color, oh yea that’s right. So all in all I think all of this is crazy, but cool all at the same time. I think were in for a sweet ride and we just need to hold on cause its going to come at us fast.
ReplyDeleteI think this is cool. It makes me think of what we could come up with next. I’ve seen a table that responds to the people sitting at it. It is called the iTable and it’s pretty cool. The world thinks that it can’t do anything, that all the time spent trying to progress is worthless. I mean after all, we’re just going to become extinct at one point in time anyway. The world and its people are fickle things, which come and go and fly and fall, but generally staying the same. I think that this technology will be leading us into a new generation of devices. Instead of actually having something to type on you simply type on anything around you. The way people think of technology will change and so will the places that technology takes us. It is the spearhead into the future and beyond. Yeas we may feel the need to progress further in technology, and for good reason. We can go anywhere we want to go. All we need is the initiative, all we need is the drive and feeling of self worth to actually go there and feel what they need to feel. It comes as no surprise that this technology exists. I think we are completely capable of doing anything we want to. Next I think we should have devices that create holograms that we can interact with. Like emwashburn said, “Literally, wow,” and I agree. Like GReingheirt said, every time someone comes out with something like this it still amazes me.
ReplyDeleteLike greg and tyler and pretty much everyone else said, my first reaction to this was "woah thats really cool" its amazing to think that just 17 years ago our parents didnt even have cell phones and like 25 years ago there werent really any computers. and now its crazy if you DONT have one. this new technology is a great thing but it can also be a bad thing. I think that people (myself included) are already too enveloped in technology and social networking as it is (facebook, text messaging) and i feel that in the future people aren't really going to do anything without everyone knowing about it. is that a bad thing? i dont know i just think its crazy that just 20 years ago the thought of having the internet was so farfetched.
ReplyDelete
